The Walnut Creek high school recently received a $200,000 grant from the Jewish Community Endowment Fund to buy the tablets. Teachers can also hand over an iPad to a student to do an equation, or can make annotations as students follow along. Another app allows students who are reading to touch a word, get its definition and also hear what it should sound like, said Campbell...at some point, he said, iPads will take the place of textbooks. Already, teachers place many assignments and notes online for students in Google documents rather than on paper handouts in class. .."Kids are still required to crack open a book," she said. "But times are changing and I think my role as a teacher is changing. I am not just charged with teaching them the material but also how to use new technology to find and analyze the material."
